Is it Too Late for 2020 Design Trends?

1. Grandmillenial Style

The current rise of Grandmillenial Style is a major trend in 2020. This style is often seen using floral patterns on upholstery, wall-coverings or really any surface, vintage hardware and décor, with modern furniture accents. A touch of grandma, mixed with Bohemian travels and floor pillows for added comfort. While the #GrandMillennial maybe getting some current trend traction this year this generation clash is the combination of long standing interior staples. Mixing Hollywood Regency with the recent Bohemian styling has made this the fancy of many apartments.

How should you get in on this trend? – Consider purchasing a peel and stick floral wallpaper, like this one from Anthropologie.com. Peel and Stick wallpapers are not only easy to use, but also come with the perk of a fast + ever interchanging design world.

2. IN With Bold Monochromatic, OUT With Pale Monochromatic

Bold and bright colors in 2020, and even further into 2021. An eclectic mix of ideas from emerging designers and a decade of excess has added more personality into paint color choices then seen in the prior two decades. Monochromatic in neutrals reined supreme when everyone was reeling from the chaos in the busy outside world. With the change in recent pace of life more people are craving vibrancy in their living spaces.

Push past your comfort zones. If you are wary of bringing color or pattern to your space, try starting small – paint a bold color in your bathroom and show some unique personality.

3. A Mix of Old and New (Comfort Zone)

Mixing modern and vintage elements gives a room a casual confidence. When executed appropriately it provides an aesthetic comfort through a relatively unnoticed sense of balance and proportion, two of the key elements of interior design. Picking up a great antique, and even using heirloom pieces passed down through generations mixed with some modern accents, can really make a space achieve that comfortable and lived-in look.

Grab those antique chairs or coffee tables that have been sitting in storage and mix them into your updated rooms for a great result.  Leave the pattern for small accents to keep the scheme clean.

4. Painting Doors and Trims (Not White)

Stop being plain Jane. It is often expected to walk into a space and see doors and trims painted crisp white. In 2020 white doors and trims are becoming less popular, we anticipate this trend to continue. Not only does using darker color emphasize the architectural elements in an interior, but it also provides a more lively contrast. Jane will be shocked.

This interior photo, a current House of Dietrich project, is a Victorian home renovation where we painted the trims throughout most of the home SW7029 Agreeable Gray.

5. Quartz Vs. Marble – Saying Goodbye To Granite

We are now seeing a real decline in granite, coming with the rise of quartz and engineered finishes.

Real marble finishes have always been a symbol of beautiful high-end interior design. In 2020 and beyond, quartz will be used in homes more often for many reasons. In the Northeast quartz has been a norm for the last 5 plus years. Engineered and printed finishes have made it more appealing and to the untrained eye unidentifiable as an alternate to marble. Real marble comes with the cost of heavy sealing and maintenance, quartz can withstand more general wear and tear.

Try choosing a quartz finish – no one will know the difference! A popular choice is a simple calacatta quartz.

Frankly we’d like to forget many things about 2020 that’s why it took so long to get these trends out to you. Joking aside the biggest trend take away should be truly loving your space. Make it yours, make it your safe haven, give it life, feed your soul. Be kind.

With love,
